China’s Mars mission marked a milestone yesterday when its Zhurong rover successfully landed on the Red Planet.
The mission, named Tianwen-1, has three main objectives: to orbit Mars, land on it and deploy a rover to explore the planet’s surface. The rover, named Zhurong after the Chinese god of fire, has six wheels and weighs about 240 kilograms.
The Zhurong rover is equipped with a variety of instruments to study the Martian environment, including a panoramic camera, a multispectral camera, and a ground-penetrating radar. The rover will also collect samples of Martian soil and rock to be returned to Earth for further analysis.
